Between the years of 1980’s and now video games are taking the blame for causing violence all over the country. In which schools, teachers and most of all parents are worried. They are worried about the impact the violent games have on their youth. It is my opinion that video games do not cause the violence that occurs in this country.
Violence is caused by many things around us. People are constantly influenced by the world around them. We came in contact with violence through music, streets, and even exposure in our own houses. Exposure to violence at a young age also influences our behavior. Video games is also an aspect of life that depicts violence. However, this does not mean it is responsible for actions of its users and gamers. According to the article entitled “Video Games” in the Current Issues publication the “California Supreme Court also concluded the evidence linking video games and violence is weak” (Current Issues 1). This means that the connection between violence and video games is not strong.
The Entertainment Software Association also agrees with the Supreme Court “ The ESA contends that facts, common sense, and numerous studies all debunk the myth that there is a link between computer and video games and violence” (Current Issues 1). The ESA has investigated this connection as well and has proven that there is no violence behind using video games.
In fact it can be argued that video games have a positive effect on the youth. “These possibilities now have some additional scientific backing as new studies conducted over the past decade show that using video games may increase a student’s performance” (Current Issues 2). This supports my opinion because it shows that it can support you in school. For example, there is a website called Funbrain.com that helps you with the basic math and reading skills. It helps the younger youth in school.
Mature games can also affect the younger youth in a negative way. “Five separate effects emerge with considerable consistency. . . .[Mr. Anderson from the American Psychiatric Association says] violence in video games is significantly associated with increased aggressive behavior, thoughts, and affect; increased physiological arousal, and decreased prosocial (helping) behavior.” I have recently played Modern Warfare III, which is rated M for mature. I do not think it makes me aggressive or violent. It also gives me an opportunity to play with different people and to collaborate to win.
Video games do not cause people to be violent. If anything video games are a great activity to do when your bored and when you want to have fun. There is a constant debate about whether or not video games are responsible for the violence in our country. It is my opinion that video games are in fact not responsible for violent events. In order to solve this issue people need to take a chill pill and think before they act.
I found this post interesting because I agree with you 100%. A handheld controller does not help you pull a trigger on a real gun. Therefore a controller cannot help you become a better shooter.
Thanks for your post, I am happy that you agree with me because no hand held controller can really make you a better shooter. A game should not even motivate you to do something violent. (Tyrone)
I found this post interesting because I agree with you. I play video games all the time and I never have bad thoughts.Do you play video games a lot?
I agree, shooting a gun with a xbox controller and using a real firearm are completely different. Videogames have always been blamed for the link between kids and violence ever since games like grand theft auto came out
